Happy Holidays!

I wish you the warmest, kindest, most peaceful holiday season you've ever had.

And I also wish you the most ridiculous, random, hilarious, laugh until you fall off your chair holiday, too!

Many of you know that this was a difficult year for me, due to my father's illness and recent passing.  But I am still so filled with gratitude and wonderful memories from 2010.  And you've been a big part of that!  You have all been so uplifting, kind, generous, and FUNNY all year.  You are all bright beams of light in this world.  Don't ever forget that.

Some holiday themed questions for you:

1. Do you make New Year's Resolutions?  If so, do you have any regarding music / singing?
2. Best holiday songs ever, in your opinion:
3. Worst holiday songs - the ones that make you want to throw yourself down a flight of stairs:
4. What are you doing New Year's Eve?

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!  Here's to making 2011 a year to remember!

Talk to the People!

SHOWCASE REHEARSALS:
SUNDAY, JAN 9 1pm - 3pm
SUNDAY, JAN 16, 1pm - 3pm
Performers should attend one or both.  They are only $10 each!

There is no greater sin for a performer than to be uninteresting. We strive for quality, but the technique means nothing if the performance lacks life, passion, intrigue. Venue, audience, genre, and music selection will change the expectations of what makes a performance interesting, but never forget you are an ENTERTAINER. You must be entertaining! - Vocal Coach Mister Tim
Luis is working on a really cool original song.  I'm trying like mad to convince him to sing at the showcase.
Bring on the peer pressure!  LOL :)

As we prepare for the MMVS showcase (details on the MMVS Events page, see link to the right), I see a lot of you trying to figure out how to move, where to look, and what to do while you're singing.  It's natural for you to feel this way... but you've got to work through it, and I have some things for you to try.

1. Pay attention when you talk to people today.  When you tell stories about funny things that happened or things that pissed you off you will use your hands, your face, and your entire body to communicate to your friends and family.  When you are singing you have to use the same amount of energy.  Similar actions will work wonders.  Talk to the people!

Nilani is a music therapist.  She helps kids with disabilities connect and communicate through music.
Music heals.  Nilani rocks!
2. In order to communicate with other people you have to understand the song.  You have to know what every word means and you have to know the overall point of the song.  If you have no clue, or just a vague idea like "Oh, it's about really loving someone a lot," then your performance won't connect with people.  Make up a very specific story about it (in your mind) and then tell that story.  Talk to the people!

3. Watch videos of the different ways your favorite performers use action in their live performances.  If they are "still" at times, watch carefully.  I promise you they are not standing without any motion or emotion.  Watch verrrry carefully, and then try it.

4. Tell yourself how to feel in each verse, for each line, and really FEEL those emotions before you open your mouth.  Magical things happen.  I've seen hints of it in many of your lessons this week.

5. When you're practicing alone, go completely nuts and run around like a maniac while you sing.  Pretend you're performing at Madison Square Garden and your hair is on fire.  Free yourself to be crazy and not have a care in the world how ridiculous you look.  Now stop... catch your breath... isn't that FUN?  At least a little bit?  Are you laughing?  ...  Now, let that fun-loving, free-styling person help you create an entertaining and memorable performance.  Talk to the people!

Questions for you, once you've tried some of these suggestions:

1. Which of these performance tips have you tried?
2. What are the results?
3.  How do you feel?
4. What are you doing differently?
5. Did you know that you can sign up to receive this blog via RSS?  See the new link/button on the right (in the margin).
6. Which of the rehearsals to you plan to attend?  You don't have to commit this week but I'm looking to get an idea.
7. CONGRATULATIONS COLE MURPHY FOR REACHING LEVEL 1 THIS WEEK!   Those of you working on Level 1 - do you have a goal date for completion?  If not, SET ONE NOW!  :)
8.  Y'all know how much I love you, right?

In other news... MMVS had a pretty exciting weekend!  Take a look at what some of your fellow MMVS-ers accomplished...

KICKING DAISIES is Radio Disney's NEXT BIG THING!  Congratulations Duran, Caitlin, Carly and Ben!   Way to represent MMVS.  We love you!

We found out the news backstage before their sold out show at FTC's Stage One on Friday.   I made a really fun video of that moment (and before/after that moment), but I'm not allowed to release it until Disney releases similar footage we sent to them that night.   Stay tuned!

Big shout out to MMVS favorite, RICHARD GRANGER, who's band, Take Zero, rocked the stage that night!  Also, big shout out to MMVS new comer, CHRIS CONWAY, who's band That's The Problem played a kicking opening set.  Way to go guys (dude awesome).

Whew... so then on Sunday MMVS Level 1 Winners, KATIE HODES and JORDAN KELLOGG took the stage at Stratford Theatre for the Red School's annual charity concert.  They brought the house down with their new hit "My Biggest Mistake" and Christina Perri's tune "Jar of Hearts." With beautiful harmonies and powerful vocals, these girls showed me they are learning how to connect with their audience through their performances.  Congratulations, NEVER4GET!

Please post answers to the following questions to comments:
1. Do you know what song you would like to perform (or have you narrowed it down)?
2. Do you want our advice on which song to choose?
3. Rumor has it that Mel will sing a few tunes at this show... any requests?
4. How do you plan to prepare?

What I love most about music is it changes your mood and you can get inspired by lyrics. Sometimes it helps you get over a break up, or it makes you wanna dance.
What inspires me to write songs is usually guys who have hurt me in the past, things that are going on with friends, loving or missing something or someone. I usually cry when im writting sad songs because i write in the moment. If something bad is happening i will write something down quickly after.
What I look for in a friend is someone who is crazy funny, trustworthy and loyal. Also someone who would have my back no matter what happened. I made some mistakes with friends in the past and i need to chose people that i can really rely on.

Best thing from the 90's: i kinda miss Britney Spears and the back street boys
In five years I will be... partying it up being 21 living it up in hollywood with Jordan. And some hit songs out there :P

Performance Workshop Recap

Yesterday ROCKED.  As Richard would say, it was "dude awesome."   Fifteen MMVSers got together to figure out what makes a performance truly memorable and bring some of that to their own performances.  The answers ranged from "energy, emotion and originality" to "professionalism, ability to handle mistakes, and vocal range/power."  Ultimately, we agreed that there are four keys to an awesome performance.

Preparation (Seeking perfection through lessons, practice, rehearsal, song selection, research of venues and getting to know your strengths/weakness)
Experience (Gaining professionalism by working the microphone, managing your monitors, handling mistakes on stage, getting over your nerves and reading the crowd)
Action (Movement, stage presence, stage set-up, expression, dynamics, crowd interaction, band interaction.  What you do, visually, to make the audience feel something)
Connection (Connecting with the music, the audience, and yourself.  This is when the magic happens.)

You guys made some great points about these four categories.  You all seemed to agree that while "connectivity" is what makes a good performance a great one, you could never truly get there without preparation, experience and action.

Funny - that's the point that I was gonna make!

Next we were treated to a brief performance from every student in attendance.  Everyone volunteered and everyone was inspiring!  We did not critique technique.  We talked about how we felt as audience members - and as performers - during each song.   I hope you all learned that even though you might be nervous or in unfamiliar situations, you can still make a roomful of people feel like they are "having oatmeal in front of a fire" or "instantly happy and excited" just by sharing a bit of who are you are inside.

Lastly, we were treated to a little chat with Kicking Daisies' managers, Brian Murphy and Rich Herzfeld.  They talked about the importance of connecting with the audience - not just impressing them.  We also talked about the hard work involved and how amazing you all are for being committed to your passion for music.  It sets you apart, and I'm so proud to know you!

All in all, I thank you for a great day and I hope you had a great time.  Please take a moment to post your feedback to comments.  You are shaping the MMVS workshops and programs for 2011!  If you didn't attend the workshop, please answer all that apply.

1. How did you feel about your performance before you sang vs. right after you sang at the workshop?
2. What were the most important things you learned?
3. Was there a performance that was special to you?  That really moved you?
4. What areas of performance (Preparation, Experience, Action, Connection) do you feel come easily to you?  Which ones are you committed to working on in 2011?
5. What topics would you like to see covered in the future workshops?  What activities would you like to do with your fellow MMVS artists?

Talk About Performance!

Next Sunday, 11/21 is the first Performance Workshop held at MMVS in Fairfield.  You're all invited to sign up.  $30 for all students, FREE for those who achieve level 1 status this season.    We're going to talk about the amount of preparation required to let go and be yourself on stage.  We'll hear from professional performers like Mike Falzone and Carly Kalafus about how they have come to feel comfortable and at ease in front of large audiences.  We'll take turns singing and discovering how to create that undeniable connection with our audience (in this case, each other).

As for the Level 1 Contest, we've got ties all over the place!   There are six winners (two-way ties for 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and others who I expect to finish their final songs this week.  I'm very proud!

Here's a treat for you: an MMVS interview with Kicking Daisies bassist/singer Carly Kalafus.  Almost two years ago she was reluctant to join the band, had never performed before and certainly was not comfortable singing lead vocals.  Today she talks to us about finding a home on stage, where she can be herself 100% of the time.

Guys with Guitars

MMVS saw a lot of guys with guitars this week!
Here are a few pics of them and a few questions for you:

1. Who is the best male singer of all time?
2. Who is your favorite guitar player?
3. If you could play one musical instrument (that you can't already play) what would it be?
4. What is your current song project at MMVS and how is it going?

Mike S. is a professional singer/musician who leads a contemporary band at a church in Fairfield, CT.  Blue and I went to one of his services this year and we were blown away by the singing, the music, and the beautiful service.
Danny M is new to MMVS this Fall.  What a vocal range on this guy!  He's working hard to reach Level 1 and make all of his musical dreams come true.
Casey C. has been a friend and musical colleague of mine for years.  It's very special to have him working with me at MMVS now.  And get this: Casey was accepted to medical school this week!  The future Dr. will be treating us to a performance at the MMVS workshop 11/21/10.

Next Big Thing

Vote (5 Stars!) for Kicking Daisies on Disney's Next Big Thing!

My students Duran, Caitlin, Carly (and lead guitarist, Ben) are the featured artists on Disney's "Next Big Thing" competition for the next two weeks.  During that time, I am asking you, their fellow vocal students and music fans, to give them 5 stars once per day on the web site and via text message.
There are five acts competing to become Disney's "Next Big Thing."  The winner gets a single released by Disney and plays a huge concert sponsored by Disney, with previous winner All Star Weekend.

You can text "NBT" to 347639 (once per day).  You will get a text back asking to rank KD from 1 - 5.  Please vote 5!!

Fun Fact: I make a brief appearance in one of the Kicking Daisies home videos on the Disney site!  If you know where I am, post to comments (but don't give it away)!

Also!  Post your practice experiences to comments here!

Peace and love,

Best Friends Forever

My BFF is Mike Falzone!

This post is dedicated to my student and great friend (nicknamed "BFF"), Mike Falzone.  Mike has the most outstanding musical work ethic I have ever seen.  He works to better himself as a guitarist, writer, and singer every day.  He does all of his own marketing, is a professional videographer, and still has time to be known as one of the nicest people in the music business (or any business).

Recently Mike's efforts have been rewarded and he has earned some amazing opportunities!  Perhaps one of the most exciting of these is his newly released single "Famous," produced by Grammy winning producer Mike Mangini.  I worked with Mike & Mike during their recording sessions.  Even though I heard it coming together I am still blown away by how cool this tune came out!  Hurrah for BFFs kicking butt!

Check it out and tell him I sent you.    Mike Falzone Band Page on Facebook

The "Right Way" to Sing

Almost everyone comes to lessons looking for the "right way" to sing.  Yes, there are some rules that should be followed to allow you to be a healthy, consistent and unique singer.  But there is also the rule of balance.  I may ask you to work on getting your voice to resonate forward, in the mask of your face.  Or, I may just ask you to focus on containing the air and keeping the vocal cords closed instead of pushing the air "forward."  When it comes to this, it's about balance.  My cues for you are going to be based on your voice, your experience, your level of training, etc.  Don't focus on an absolute "right" or "wrong" answer.  Trust your coach.  Trust the process, and aim for personal excellence.

What are you working on right now?  Post your practice time, your exercises, and your singing goals to COMMENTS.

Love,
Mel

Expressing Gratitude

Mel & Blue hanging out at MMVS!

Finishing up a long day of teaching today and getting ready for OPENING DAY of MMVS in Fairfield tomorrow!  I'm so excited.

Here's the deal: I spend all day with creative people.  They talk to me, they sing to me.   They write amazing things and think hilarious things and say the most random things I've ever heard.  I love every minute of it.

I have been blessed with work that I find to be meaningful, fulfilling and so fun it feels like play time.  It's the best life ever.  This feeling is exactly what I wish for you: gratitude.

I am grateful for my role in life as a vocal coach and mentor to talented and creative individuals.
I am grateful for my loving, loyal friends and family.
I am grateful for my strength and health.

In addition to whatever your thoughts and questions are regarding this week's lesson, post THREE THINGS for which you are grateful to comments.  If one of them turns into a song idea, that would be cool.

xoxoxo,
Mel

Take it to the Next Level

So... I got to see most of you this week and introduce you to Mel's Vocal Program (MVP).    I was a little worried that this structure wouldn't be seen as a good thing by everyone.  I should have known better.  You guys ROCK!  I've gotten so many texts and emails from you telling me how excited you are to work on this program.  Haven't seen a lot of posts to the blog yet, but I know you'll get in the groove soon!

This program takes your vocal technique and performance to the next level by giving you a checklist to work on over the next few months.    Once you meet the Level 1 requirements you get to choose a pathway for Level 2.  There will be three Level 2 programs: Artist (future recording artists and bands), Academic/Musical Theater, and General.  Level 2 students are invited to special workshops, showcases and small group sessions designed to keep you inspired and informed while you work your butt off to reach your potential.

The Level 1 Requirements are posted in the menu bar to the right of this page.

Those I saw this week... POST YOUR PRACTICE TIME AND OTHER COMMENTS HERE!  Love ya!

What Are Your Goals?

Every year around this time I get jealous of everyone who gets to buy new notebooks and fall boots for school.  So I got out and buy some new notebooks and boots!

This time of year is a fresh start for all of us.  The year ahead is full of possibilities.

What do you like best about Fall?  What are your goals for this school year?

Post your favorite things about Fall and your goals for this year to "comments."

Disney's Next Big Thing

I couldn't tell anyone exactly what we were doing in Hollywood when I went to LA with Kicking Daisies early this month.

But now I can!

The band was chosen to be one of five acts who participate in Disney's "Next Big Thing" in September and October.  You'll be seeing Kicking Daisies on the Disney Channel (and hearing them on Disney Radio) starting September 15, 2010.

It is a competition to name one of the acts "Disney's Next Big Thing," so I'll keep you posted on how/when to vote once the context begins.  Last year's winner was All Star Weekend.

When we were in Hollywood Kicking Daisies did all the filming and interviews for the Next Big Thing and I got spend some time with the other artists.  We had a fun jam session on the bus back to the hotel one day - some of which I captured on video.  I'm not sure what I'm allowed to post from that so as I find it out I'll be in touch.

This entire experience has made me a better teacher and taught me a lot more about what it takes to make it to the next level.

Can't wait to see you at your next lesson.  Let's make this school year one to remember.

xoxo,
Mel

MM Vocal Studio Logo by Caitlin Kalafus

I love this logo that Cait sketched!  We were in Jersey for a couple of days this week for some Kicking Daisies shows.  Cait was ready to break out the sketch pad as soon as we got to the hotel.  She came up with some cool ideas, then I asked her to turn the "V" into a dragonfly, and voila!  MMVS!

What do you think?

MM Vocal Studio grand opening in Fairfield, CT!

Hi everyone,

I'm so excited!  My new vocal studio is opening up in Fairfield, CT in just a couple of weeks!  It looks like it will be ready to go as early as Tuesday, September 7th, with some very special "grand opening" activities the following week.

It's a 300 square foot studio just minutes from the Post Rd in downtown Fairfield.  It will be fully equipped with a digital piano, mics, guitars, amps, instruments and even a drum kit for when you want to work your voice in a real band setting.

I have lots more news to share with you about workshops that will be offered this Fall, as well as new guidelines and programs for students in both my Stratford and Fairfield locations.   Follow this blog so you don't miss a thing.  And post your thoughts, questions, news or randomness to comments!

This is going to be a lot of fun.  Glad you're here with me!

XOXO,
Mel

Keep it Real

It's hard to be a dreamer and a realist at the same time.   Creating a life in music takes big dreams, hard work, thick skin, and lots of "real world" knowledge.  Read this article and post your thoughts/feelings to comments.

Creativity: Don't Edit Yet!

I've had the good fortune of being in writing sessions with Grammy-winning songwriters.  They can create amazing songs within a matter of hours - start to finish, front to back, chords, drums, bass, three part harmony, cool lyrics, etc - while staying within the original intent and theme of the song.   Through experience and practice they have developed their own unique process of writing and co-writing hit songs on demand.    Yet even they experience writer's block from time to time.

So what do you do, as an aspiring artist who wants to begin writing songs and/or better yourself as a writer?

The first bit of advice I give most of my students is pretty simple: don't try to create and edit at the same time.

(And with that I will let you know that I deleted and re-wrote the above sentence a few times before allowing it to stand as is, LOL).

The right side of your brain is creative, artistic and musical.  The left side is very verbal and logical.   I find it is helpful not to allow them to fight for control during the writing process.  Instead, let them take turns.

Give your creative self a good twenty minutes to warm up (write all the crappy cliches for a while and something unique might appear once they're out of the way), and try to let it flow.  Later, perhaps later that day or later that week, it is appropriate to go back to it with a more critical approach and think about whether your verbs agree with your nouns (more on the use of good grammar in songs in another rant - I mean, blog post).  That's the best time to take a step back and think about what an objective listener will understand (or not get) from your song.

Have fun, and have the courage to write something really awful in the privacy of your own mind.  No one needs to know.  And we'll all enjoy the stuff you choose to share when you're ready.
